We care about the environment and our community
Bringing Puu-Juuka’s old buildings back to life by renovating them and building hotel rooms in them is the foundation of our sustainability work. When we give old wooden houses a new life, we also preserve a significant piece of Finnish cultural history and architectural heritage. Similar wooden house areas that have survived from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are rare in our country.
Nature is also particularly important to us. We are aware that the unique lake and mountain landscapes of North Karelia may bring you to stay with us at Hotel Puu-Juuka, so we want to take good care of the surrounding nature.
We strive to respect nature in all our activities. We keep the Puu-Juuka environment clean and make sustainable choices in the purchases and other solutions of Matkailukeskus Puu-Juuka. Through our customer instructions and other communications, we also aim to guide you to practices that respect nature and the environment.

We strive to use energy sparingly
Our old wooden houses, which serve as accommodation, are heated with district heating, which is produced with wood chips. The electricity in our houses is mainly produced with renewable energy sources such as hydropower and wind power, as well as emission-free nuclear power by the local electricity company.
We monitor energy and water consumption closely, as the maintenance of several properties and basic hotel operations, such as cleaning and laundry, consume a lot of energy and water. For this reason, we have also refined our basic operations and cleaning process to be energy efficient. For example, we only change the sheets and towels in hotel rooms after you leave, even for longer stays, and we only clean your room every other day. This way we save water and energy.
In addition, the lighting in the common areas of our buildings works with motion detection. Energy efficiency has also been considered in the renovation solutions of the buildings, so that waste heat or coolness cannot be formed.

We favor a circular economy
We sort cardboard, plastic, paper, metal, glass, bio and mixed waste. There are waste sorting points in the common areas of our buildings and hotel rooms, from where the cleaners transport them to our larger sorting point, from where the waste ends up incinerated and in larger sorting centers.
We also prefer recycling when purchasing equipment and furniture. For example, the kitchen furniture in the Seurojentalo, our laundry system, and the interior design elements and some of the furniture in our hotel rooms are purchased second-hand.

We make sustainable purchases
When renovating houses, we have considered the durability and ease of maintenance of building and interior design materials. We generally prefer domestic producers in our material and equipment purchases. For example, some of the beds in hotel rooms are made in Finland. The detergents we use for cleaning are domestic and environmentally friendly.

We support locality
The core of our operations is strongly tied to locality and the history of the area. In the interior design of our houses and hotel rooms, as well as in other communications, we highlight stories from Puu-Juuka’s past. For example, the names of our houses come from their history. By reminding us of the past, we also make visible the long history of Puu-Juua, of which we are a continuation.
We also support locality in our procurement. In purchasing services, such as construction work, we particularly favor local and nearby service providers. In purchasing supplies and raw materials, we use products from local producers whenever possible. For example, we cooperate with the local Sola-soap for detergents and cleaning products.
We are part of a local cooperation network, which aims to offer you the most diverse services possible when you visit Juuka. Our goal is also to create jobs, especially for local youth.

You don't always need a car
Juuka can be reached by bus from Joensuu and Nurmes a couple of times a day. There are several daily train connections from Joensuu to Helsinki and cities along the eastern railway. So, you don’t necessarily need a car to get here, as it’s a reasonable walk from the bus stop in the center of Juuka to Puu-Juuka.
Getting around the Juuka city center is easy thanks to the short distances you can cover on foot. During the summer, we also offer village bicycles for you to use to get around the Juuka area. We also want to promote bicycle tourism, so if you arrive to us by bike or have a bicycle with you, we offer a lockable space to store it.

We offer accessible rooms
We also consider travelers with reduced mobility. We offer accessible rooms with bathrooms and toilets, and the Seurojentalo is barrier-free.

We strive for transparency
We are committed to a major project where we are renovating almost 20 old wooden houses, so the construction project has aroused interest at the local level from the beginning. We will inform you about the progress of the construction project on our own website, social media, the local newspaper and other media, because we want to keep local people, and you, up to date with what is going on in Puu-Juuka at any time. We also organize joint events to develop the area with our local cooperation network.
